Hisorical front door fittings - Information

Our range of door fittings spans styles from the Baroque period to Postmodernism. The door handles, backplates, and rosettes shown can also be combined in other configurations, as long as they are stylistically compatible.

Modern living means traditional large door handles are no longer practical. Today, exterior front doors are often fitted with a fixed knob or push handle that is permanently attached to the escutcheon or rosette. Symmetrical handles can also be converted into a matching pair of push bars. Custom-made cut plates are available in any size or thickness.

We apply varnish only on request, as no coating lasts forever. Over time, brass and iron fittings naturally develop a patina that gives them an authentic, individual charm — far more appealing than a flaking layer of varnish. Wooden handle parts and complete wooden sets can be made from ebony, grenadilla, rosewood, walnut, oak, ash, pear, plum, or other woods of your choice. The available materials and surface finishes are listed in the table above (drop-down menu).

Door signs and rosettes with smooth, unembossed surfaces can be supplied in 10 mm thickness for use as security fittings, allowing them to be fastened only from the inside. A few cast plates are available as security models; others can be fitted with internal threaded sockets on the back (where dimensions allow) for secure inside fastening.

Surfaces and materials

An overview of the abbreviations used and the available materials and surface treatments for the fittings can be found on the corresponding subpage:

Table: Surfaces | Abbreviations used

Msp: Polished brass
Msa: Antique brass, matt finish
Mss: Brass with black powder coating
MsNi: Nickel-plated brass, shiny surface
MsNim: Brass matt nickel-plated, brushed surface
MsZis Black galvanised brass
Fe: Eisen's raw
Fea: Old iron, with waxed surface on request, oil-baked
Fes: Iron, black powder-coated
FeZn: Hot-dip galvanised iron
FeZis: Black galvanised iron (see footnote on room doors)
Tg: Malleable cast iron, raw or with a surface like iron
Si: Also available as a safety shield for screwing from the inside
The available materials and surface treatments for the fittings can be seen from the abbreviations in the table above (drop-down button).

Note:

Since the handle bases of historical handle models are not strong enough to insert a square spindle all the way to the handle, we can sometimes only use 8 mm square spindles with an 8 mm/10 mm slip-on sleeve.

Due to uncertainty about the exact door thickness, we do not usually use screw pins as with modern fittings. The exact position of the handle fixing pin must be marked during installation and then drilled (3 mm).

If there is a matching interior door fitting or window handle (olive) for a front door fitting, you will find cross-references in the catalogue in the form: ZT – 1 as a reference to p. 1 in the chapter on interior door fittings.
